Malta Individual Investor Programme Nearing Cap

Malta Individual Investor Programme Nearing Cap

The Malta Individual Investor Programme (IIP) is subject to a cap of 1,800 applications, as prescribed in the Individual Investor Programme of Malta Regulations. As the IIP nears its cap, the Government of Malta has issued a deadline for the submission of applications under the IIP’s current iteration.

Established in 2014, Malta’s IIP is subject to an application cap. Regulation 12 of the Individual Investor Programme of the Republic of Malta Regulations provides that “the number of successful main applicants, excluding dependants, shall not exceed one thousand and eight hundred for the whole duration of the programme.” Now six years later, the IIP is close to reaching its prescribed application limit.

Applicants for economic citizenship of Malta must first submit an application for residence to the Malta IIP Agency. The residence application must be made in person for the purpose of supplying biometrics. As such, the Agency has announced the following deadlines for residence and citizenship applications under the current IIP:

Deadline for Residence Applications Deadline for Citizenship Applications
31 July 2020 30 September 2020

What does this update mean for me?

  1. Are you a prospective applicant to the Malta IIP?

If you are thinking of applying for citizenship by investment in Malta, it is important to be mindful of the two upcoming deadlines for submission of the residence and citizenship applications.

Please note, however, that the Maltese Government has indicated that it has no intention to end citizenship by investment in Malta. Instead, the Government is devising new regulations that will either create a new ‘Programme’ or increase the application cap on the current IIP. Hence, a person who obtains residence but fails to submit a citizenship application by 30 September 2020 may be considered for citizenship by investment under the Government’s new regulations.
